3-Sided Bridges and Culverts


Three‑sided, flat‑decked rectilinear precast units placed segmentally onto a concrete foundation can be used to form a bridge. The units are tied together by grouted keyways preformed into the foundation and between units, or mechanically by lateral ties of post-tensioning strands or rods.

Most three‑sided bridge systems offer clear span units from 6 to 42 feet coupled with vertical clearances from 2 to 14 feet. This flexibility, coupled with the ability to cast skew angles up to 45 degrees, transitional and radial shapes, allows for a wide range of opening configurations. All of this ‑ and more ‑ allows for a completely precast project that is quick and efficient!

Reinforced Concrete Pipe

Reinforced concrete pipe is available in diameters of 12″ to 144. Standard pipe length is 8 feet. Longer lengths are available. Standard and heavy wall thickness are available. Joints can be tongue and groove, confined o ring, single offset with profile gasket, steel end ring and double o ring gasket joints with air test ports. Joints meet ASHTO M198, ASTM 0443 and 0361, and US Bureau of Reclamation. A large assortment of fittings are available including manhole and lateral tees, elbows, wyes, reducers, skewed ends, adapters, wall sleeves, caps/plugs, etc. A variety of linings and coatings are available if required by project conditions. Standard ASTM C76 (AASHTO M170), C361 and C655, AW WA C300 and 0302, and US Bureau of Reclamation reinforced concrete pipe designs. Designs are available for internal hydrostatic pressures up to 65 psi. Special designs are available for deep fills, jacking pipe, pipe on piles, etc.

Elliptical Concrete Pipe

Elliptical concrete pipe is available in equivalent circular diameters of 18 (14×23) through 144 (116×180) inches. Orientation may be horizontal elliptical or vertical elliptical. Standard pipe length is 6 to 8 feet. Standard wall thickness are available. Joints are typically tongue and groove for packing mastic joint compound, butyl gaskets or mortar to meet ASHTO M198A. A large assortment of fittings are available including manhole and lateral tees, elbows, wyes, reducers, skewed ends, adapters, wall sleeves, caps/plugs, etc. A variety of linings and coatings are available if required by project conditions. Standard ASTM 0507 (AASHTO M207) elliptical pipe designs.

VDOT Inlet Structures are available for almost any type of storm drain situation. The inlets are designed as top units, which are compatible with other precast manhole components.
